Finished Project: Lifeline

Lifeline
Size made: 48" (length); 26" (deep)
Craft: Knit

Materials
Needle used: US 8 (5.0 mm)circular, US 9 (5.5mm) circular
Yarn used: Berroco Inca Gold (2.82 skeins: 344 yards)
Color: 6418
Bought yarn from: Phoenix Knit Co., Phoenix, AZ
Use yarn again? I think that this yarn would be very fun to work with again, especially with a unique project.  It is kind of an odd yarn.  It seems almost metallic to me and has a nice sheen to it.  I would love to try it as a color work project or a layering piece like a camisole or shrug of some sort.

Project Details and Feedback
Duration of Project: January 1st to January 14th, 2011
Made for: undecided
Modifications: Besides quite a few mistakes (because the written instructions are pretty awful), I decided I did not like the border.  I think the original border takes away from the delicate lacy feeling of the body of the shawl.  So I decided to change it.   I ended up doing 4.5 repeats of the body but the last half repeat was rows 1-8.  Then I switched to the larger US 9 needles and knit 3 rows (garter stitch) and bound off very loosely knitwise-to mimic the border already created by the neck.
Make this pattern again?  I enjoyed making this pattern but I think that there are a lot of lovely lace shawls out there that would be a lot more fun to make and would have a better result.  I do think that this shawl is great for it's particular purpose of stretching a small amount of yarn as far as you can.
Final thoughts/ recommendations: I recommend completely ignoring the written instructions and going solely off of the charts.  I felt that there were errors in the written instructions and they weren't well worded at all.  I also think that it is important to look at a chart with lace so you can visually see if things are or are not how they are supposed to be.

What I learned/practiced in this pattern: I practiced lace and chart reading.  I also tried different techniques of joining yarn.

LeeAnn

Love this! I have yet to do a shawl and really want to. I really like it tied like a kerchief. I can see it like that under a coat for great added warmth.
Awesome!

I really love shawls as kerchiefs. It really makes a difference under a coat, especially when it's windy! I can even pull it up a bit to cover my mouth and nose! =] Another good shawl for that is the Oscilloscope shawl (but it isn't free, it is in a magazine).
